Room 11 - Mrs Christine Shadbolt (Yr 3-4 Team Leader)
The main topics of study for Room 11 students this
term are the “Me and My Friends” Health unit and the “Wild Animals in
Zoo Enclosures” Technology/Science unit. They will do an introductory
Student Search activity in getting to know students in their class and
as a concluding activity will complete “The People in Our Class Survey”
to see how much they have learned about each other. For the main study
on “Wild Animals in Zoo Enclosures”, the students will look at how
living things are suited to their particular environment and need
certain requirements to stay alive. When visiting the Hamilton Zoo later
this term, they will look specifically at how this Zoo provides for the
needs of wild animals in their enclosures. The Technology aspect of this
study involves the students in designing an enrichment toy for a
Cheetah, Wild Dog or Giraffe at the Hamilton Zoo. They will write a
factual report and a description of one wild animal and present this to
the class. Some “Friends” and “Wild Animal texts and poems will be
included in the class reading programme. Mixed media Art incorporating
photography, pencil sketching and collage will be integrated into both
topic studies. The students will do Swimming skills in preparation for
the Year 3 & 4 Syndicate Sports and Interschool Swimming Sports. Maori
Waiata (songs) will be used to learn Te Reo Maori in a fun and
meaningful way in the classroom context.
